Summerhill School

North and west of Hanna, Alberta on January 30, 2016.

The school was built in 1912 but did not have enough students to open until 1914. The glass is still in the windows. Not sure how long it lasted. From a quick look it seems like someone has used it to store grain. I love finding these in the middle of nowhere.

  1. Now that is just plain cool. I am amazed that it is still standing after 100 years. I wonder how long it was a school.

  2. Good heavens! Can you just imagine the children walking to that little school house in the Winter. I bet they had to huddle around the stove just to thaw out!

  3. Look at the snow, and the long hilly walk to get to school...the kids may have had a blast on those hills after school, ...I would've! A cozy place...I can see a pot bellied stove too, sparkle in the kids eyes, and a hundred years ago. Great photos, captured something.

  4. hi.
when we lived in manitoba my husband loved to go to evry Orthodox church outon the preairie that he could find.
always on a corner of donated land. one had what must have been a massive honeybee nest in one wall because you could hear the buzzing at a distance. each had a bell tower separate from the church building.
i am here to tell you tht pot bellied stoves can only warm the part facing them while the opposite side of yoy freezws. you turn like you atre on a spit to keep the blood from freezing.
in saskatchewn there was a place where the leader of one of these early religious movemants had a house, large for the time, with a dormer window for each wife's bedroom.
    what a way to live.
i hope the historical autthorities preserved it. that was 40 years ago.
    sorry about bad typing.
