Graburn School April 15, 2017

Located on Graburn Road south of Walsh, Alberta. A bit of a unique design. From what I could find the school operated from 1912 to 1959 however this is not the original school. I think was used as a community centre in later years.

Seventh Day Cemetery

Near Hilda, Alberta March 25, 2017. It looks abandoned.

The marker points to a cemetery just off the highway.

I did not venture in. I looked in from outside the fence. Some of the graves looked sunken it. I did not want to disturb anything.

An animal made its way into this person's final resting place.

A quick look around the area.

So I have that going for me . . .

Some days you wake up and everything is in pain. If you are like me it is the head, neck lower back, and a few other places. As for me it has been this way for the last week. Exploring on a weekend taking photos, doing some hiking, crawling over, and under fences, to get a better look at things has its rewards and some occasional unwanted side effects. Not sure what I did to cause this however I did injure something somehow.

You wake up in pain and hope it will go away before you have to get serious about starting the day. The pain is mainly due to a car accident years ago where someone t-boned the vehicle I was in. Regardless of how hurt I feel in the morning I will myself to get up, get moving, and take on the day. A person still has responsibilities to himself and others. Various painkillers have not been a solution. They help in the short term. Rest and taking things relatively easy have not worked. I gave in and had an appointment with a massage therapist.

The problem with going to a therapist is finding a good one. Some I have went to have been absolutely brutal. Once you find a good one you try to stick with them only to find they frequently have gone one day somewhere else for whatever reason and you are stuck trying to find a good one again. I think I have found a good one again after the last good one had departed. This morning I again woke up in pain after a session with a therapist the day before. This time the pain is in different places and feels different. That might be progress and a sign of everything getting back to normal and in its proper place. I am optimistic the next few days will be better.

Unknown one room schoolhouse in Montana

Spotted this on April 14, 2017. It is on Willow Creek Road north of the Oilmont Highway. It is a small school sitting behind a barbed wire fence. Photos are from the road.

Spring in Alberta

One of the sure signs of spring in Albera. Farm machinery equipment manufacturers must have hired designers at one time. The machinery I see has a sense of style. A lot of tractors have an appealing agressive look to them, like you see them and want to take one for a spin. I know nothing about any of this stuff as I have never farmed a day in my life. I do know Case has some great looking tractors.

The search for interesting signs continues . . .

South of Walsh, Alberta on April 15, 2017.

Zion Congregation Cemetery

Spotted this on a country road west of Hilda, Alberta on March 25, 2017. The direction where it is pointing is more trail than road. I actually ventured down it for a ways with my car until the ruts became too pronounced. I have read that there was a church that no longer exists and an abandoned cemetery. Destination for another day.

Train post

I was east of Medicine Hat, Alberta on April 15, 2017 and saw a train in the distance. So I took the opportunity for a train photo. My first attempt at this. My inexpensive camera was good enough for one shot as it sped by.

On a different section of track I noticed this. Much easier to take some photos since it was parked.

What is art?

I am a guy that posts hay bales. You have come to the wrong place for an answer to this question.

Bethany Lutheran Church April 14, 2017

Good Friday is a good choice for a day to track down and visit a church. I can occasionally get a little obsessive about visiting places. I had missed this on a prior visit because I was not exactly sure where it was located. Therefore I had to make another attempt to see this.

This is southeast of Oilmont, Montana located just off Gus Blaze Road. The church is a designated historic site and very rural. I had seen photos of this and I got a bit fixated on wanting to see it in person. The gravel roads were a little soft in places which is to be expected at this time of year. I parked on the road and walked up to the church. I could use the exercise and I did not want to take a chance on possibly getting stuck as I was not sure how soft this dirt road was. There is a farm somewhat close nearby and that is it. This is one of those places where you can see for miles.

The door was bolted shut and I did not try to venture inside. There is a marker outside. The church was built in 1926 by Norwegian immigrants and services were held until the 1950's. It is a simple straightforward beautiful little church. For a historic site it looks abandoned and in need of a little care. The fence is in disrepair. Strong winds in this area take a toll on places. Definitely worth the hours I spent driving to get here.

Sometimes you find some great signs

Spotted April 15, 2017 east of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Sunnyside Cemetery, Alberta

Remote lonely place fifty-five kilometres via gravel roads from Coutts, Alberta which is the nearest town. The cemetery is off on a side road that has a dead end. I thought this place would be abandoned. I was surprised to find out that there are a number of relatively recent burials. Few people live in this area. Church services in the area where held in schools or in homes. People did attend church services in Montana in Whitlash years ago. There is not much in the area now. Just a little further east is the Aden, Alberta / Whitlash, Montana border crossing.

The sign is at an intersection. Take a turn where the sign points and it is up a hill on a dirt road. I need to buy a truck or SUV sometime instead of driving my car to places like this.

The hills in the background are in Montana.

This was interesting. A RCMP headstone. Born in Switzerland. Served in the NWMP (Northwest Mounted Police, forerunner of the RCMP) June 12, 1894 to June 13, 1901. Died in Lethbridge, Alberta at age 96 on January 9, 1965. He served in this area. I looked him up online, there is a database of RCMP graves online.

Keep on trucking . . . maybe not

Normally I pass up photos of abandoned vehicles. Not this one. I like the look.

St. Kilda School?

I believe this is St. Kilda School in a rural area east of Coutts, Alberta. Ran across this on April 8, 2017. The building is definitely a schoolhouse. The sign on the top of the gate says "Bowery".

From what I could find St. Kilda operated as a one room school from 1911 to 1946. The school burned down in 1923 and was rebuilt. After the school closed it became sort of a community center. The St. Kilda Society was formed to preserve the school and grounds. There was an open air dance floor in the schoolyard called the Bowery and events were held here. Over time the place became abandoned.

I wanted to get better photos of the building. It is behind a fence so therefore likely on private property. There was too much brush in the way to get decent photos from the road.

The hills in the background are in Montana.

Unique Church marker March 26, 2017

Spotted on Highway 570 somewhere east of Highway 886. Someone put up a marker to note where a sod church once stood. That would have been interesting to see.

Directly across the highway is this one noting the existence of the new church. I took a quick look and nothing remains of either at the site. Not even the outline of a foundation.

Experimental bridge photo

Take a photo. You never know what you might end up with.
